On May 4, 2025, the Jack and Jill South Suburban Chicago Chapter (JJSSCC) proudly hosted a vibrant celebration of Black heritage, unity, and legacy at our annual Black Family Day. Rooted in the theme “Honoring the Legacy & Empowering the Future,” the event brought together families for a dynamic and immersive experience designed to celebrate cultural pride, strengthen intergenerational bonds, and inspire future leaders.
A Celebration of Culture, Family, and Legacy
Families arrived in stunning African-inspired attire, setting the tone for a day steeped in tradition and community. Each family contributed a cherished heirloom or tradition, which was beautifully showcased in the JJSSCC Family Gallery Walk. This living exhibit invited families to reflect on their personal legacies while honoring the shared experiences that unite us.
Cultural Activation Stations: Hands-On Learning with Heart
Throughout the event, families engaged in thoughtfully curated cultural activation stations designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate the African American experience:
Family Tree Activity: Inspired by the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child,” families built their own family trees, honoring those who shaped their journey and recognizing the power of their village.
Crown-Making & Sensory Play: Children explored their creativity through crown-making, while sensory stations and storytime featuring African American authors nurtured a love of reading and cultural exploration.
CROWN Act STEM Station: Led by our brilliant JJSSCC Teens, families engaged in a CROWN Act Club activity that merged science with cultural advocacy. Teens educated attendees on current legislation, then guided them through the creation of custom hair oils and a celebration of heritage, self-care, and STEM learning.
Art, History, and Storytelling in Motion
A powerful theatrical performance stole the show with a lively blend of song, rap, and storytelling, highlighting the legacy of Black families, historic leaders, and the enduring impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This performance brought history to life, resonating with attendees of all ages and reinforcing the strength and brilliance of our shared legacy.
Brunch, Reflection, and Connection
Prior to the performance, families gathered for a warm family-style brunch, where meaningful conversations took place around legacy, impact, and hope. This moment of fellowship further emphasized the importance of nurturing pride in our heritage and passing wisdom down to future generations.
Empowering the Future Through Literacy
In alignment with our commitment to education, the event culminated in the collection of over 500 books by African American authors and illustrators. These books were donated to a local community center, promoting literacy, representation, and a love of reading among children in our wider community.
Black Family Day 2025 was More Than an Event
Black Family Day 2025 was an experience. One that honored where we’ve been, celebrated where we are, and invested in where we’re going. Through every activity, conversation, and moment of joy, we reaffirmed that when we honor our legacy, we truly empower the future.
